Serena Williams SELF Magazine CovHER
“I am who I am. I love who I am.” ~Serena Williams~
The 34 year old tennis champ continues to show us what a real body is supposed to look like. Inside the issue, Serena dishes on her body, her cameo on Beyonce‘s visual album Lemonade, her strict diet, and things she wished people didn’t know about her.
After reading this SELF magazine article about Serena, I have a new found respect for her and her approach at life and career. Her “winning is my only option” attitude is the exact reason why she’s been so successful in a predominantly white sport.
Peep excerpts and more pics below:
On her body:
“I love my body, and I would never change anything about it,” she says. “I’m not asking you to like my body. I’m just asking you to let me be me. Because I’m going to influence a girl who does look like me, and I want her to feel good about herself.”
On her cameo in Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade:
“I was so honored!”
On her sister Venus:
“Venus is the best. I look up to her, and I always wonder, if I was the older sister, would I have set the good example that she set for me?” The two shared a house until earlier this year, when Serena moved into her own home in an adjacent gated community. She adds, “I hate playing Venus. She’s the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced.”
On being the top African-American woman in a historically white sport:
“I can’t say I am the pioneer because it was Althea Gibson, it was Zina Garrison, it was Arthur Ashe, it was so many people before me. I appreciate being in a position where I was chosen to be a role model. Obviously, being black in tennis wasn’t easy, even in the ’90s.”
