As we told you last week to stay tuned for part 2 of the makeup mistakes that add 10 years to your youth, we’re coming to you with the last five.
Mistake #6: Going Overboard with Lip Liner
The main reason for a lip liner is to define your lips and prevent color from settling into the lines around the mouth — hence it’s very important to choose your lip liner wisely. Lining your lips to heavy or with a color that’s too dark, it makes them look really tight. The more natural your liner is in blending in with your lipstick the better. Choose a creamy (Motives Lip Crayon, $14.75) that won’t settle into dry patches and use it to fill your lips entirely so it will spread evenly.
Mistake #7: Using Liner and Mascara on Your Lower Lashes
Highlighting your lower lashes can make your eyes look drooping and draw unnecessary attention to dark circles. Instead of using a liner or mascara on your lower lashes, focus more on curling your upper lashes because it will give your eyes a more popping/open effect. Be sure to wiggle a volumizing mascara into the roots of your upper lashes and slowly through to the ends to give the most uplifting effect. (Try Motives for Lala Mineral Volumizing & Lengthening Mascara, $16.50)
Mistake #8: Skipping Blush
A little rosy blush goes a long way, it can instantly bring your face and cheeks to life. The biggest issue I see with blush is that people really don’t know how to apply it. When applied right, blush can offer a little lift. To apply the correct way, smile and find the fleshiest part of your cheek and apply the color slightly above it. Avoid a striping the color along your actual cheekbone.
Mistake #9: Applying Lipstick Straight From The Tube
To avoid lipstick bleeding, use your finger or a lip brush to apply your lipstick to insure that you don’t deposit too much pigment at the borders of your lips. Focus on putting the lipstick in the center of your mouth then blend it evenly with your finger. Top with a lip gloss or balm for smoothness. Or to avoid all the possible lipstick bleeding, you could use a lip plumper that will make your lips look fuller instantly and smooth out the lines in your lips. (Try Motives Pucker Up Lip Plumper, $16.00)
Mistake #10: Choosing a Too-Dark Brow Pencil
I’ve been guilty of this one too because the one place I used to buy my brush-a-brow powder from suddenly went out of business and I couldn’t find anything even close to what I was used to wearing for my brows. If you run into this problem, the best thing to do is take a clear mascara and go over your brows, then finish up with an eyeshadow that is close to your brow color and fill in the areas that need it most. Be sure to brush your brows up and out towards your temples. If you must use a pencil be sure to use one that is actually a little lighter than you normally used a few years ago as our brow color tends to fade as we get older. (Try Motives Essential Brow Kit, $29.95 and Motives Eyebrow Pencils, $14.00).
