Kerry Washington is seriously doing her thing and I must say that the hit new series Scandal has definitely put her on the map, but what made her say she would’ve passed on the role had the President been black???
Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch, she had very good reason for making that statement. We already know how much flack our President Barack Obama has been getting just because he’s black so having a show like this would really give folks something to talk about.
Kerry recently revealed in Ebony Magazine exactly why she would’ve walked away from the role:
I was a little concerned because [the character has] a scandalous relationship with the [occupant of the] White House.
I thought, ‘If the president on the show is Black, I will not do the show.’ Because to me, it was too important a moment. I didn’t want to do anything that compromised my relationship with the [president] or that made it seem like I had an insider view on the Obama presidency.
I thought that would be so disrespectful and so against all the work that I had done.
I commend Kerry for even going so far as to almost walk away from a role, which has changed her career tremendously, out of concern for our President. If any of you watched the ‘Next Chapter’ episode where Oprah interview the Kerry Washington and Shonda Rhimes, you would’ve saw where they had to make it very clear that real life fixer, Judy Smith, didn’t have an affair with President Bush. Judy even went so far as to call former President Bush and let him know a show would be airing in her honor and not to get bothered by the affair going on between the characters on the show.
