In a world full of people that are stuck on appearance, size truly does matter, especially in the fashion industry. Earlier I was looking at a premiere of an MTV upcoming show about this young lady Chelsea Settles who wants badly to become a fashion model. So you might ask, what’s holding her back from her dream? You’ve guessed it, her weight. Chelsea Settles weighs 324lbs and is dying to do whatever it takes to pursue her dream of having a career in the fashion industry.
MTV decided to give this small town girl a chance to make it big. They’re making a reality show about her and her journey trying to pursue a career in the fashion world as a plus-size model. What MTV is striving to do is to test the acceptance or non-acceptance of a plus-size fashion model.
I am a plus-size woman as well and have been for many years. Although I’m working on losing weight, it’s not easy and there is a huge difference in how people treat you when you’re a big woman. I haven’t ran across many prejudice or judgmental people to my knowledge, but I do know there is a difference. Even Jennifer Hudson made a statement recently in reference to how different people treat her now since her recent weight loss. Not to mention, there have been several other thick celebrity divas who have lost a tremendous amount of weight, such as Missy Elliot, Mo’Nique, Jill Scott, Jordan Sparks, and Kelly Price just to name a few! I thought maybe they had broken some barrier but it seems that the fashion industry just isn’t budging on this whole ‘plus-size’ model thing.
I understand it’s more so about being healthy and that’s one of my main reasons for losing weight, but for the most part people automatically look at you different if you’re a certain size. I’m really happy MTV decided to create this show to inform the rest of the world that this truly is a problem.
Do you all think MTV will be able to break down barriers in the fashion industry with this show? Will the fashion industry recognize that beauty is within? Will this show give hundreds, maybe even thousands of other plus-size women the opportunity to purse a career in the fashion industry?
Well hopefully it will! It’s time the fashion industry recognizes there are different types of people, shapes and sizes. Being thin doesn’t always make you beautiful.
