I don’t know about y’all but it’s HOT in the ATL and I’m always up for having some fun things to do inside or chill at night on my back porch. I ran across this really cute DIY idea on She Knows and wanted to share it with you all. It’s summertime so might as well keep a cool drink around and figure out cute little ways to make adult drinks, plus this will save you money on a real keg.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 large watermelon
- A sharp knife
- A large spoon
- A large bowl
- A pen or marker
- Power drill with a 3/4-inch drill bit
- 1 beer shank kit
Now that you have all your tools, here’s what you need to do to create your very own watermelon cocktail keg:
Step 1
Be sure to look at the watermelon really good to determine which side would be the best to place the faucet. If your watermelon is unsteady when standing it up, cut off a really small portion on the bottom so it will be able to stay in an upright position. Once you have it steady, take the knife and cut the top center in a circle to form a “lid” in the same method as you would carve a pumpkin. Remove the lid and set it aside for later.
Step 2
Take a large spoon and scoop out all the watermelon and the juice and place it into a large bowl for later. Be sure to only scoop out the watermelon and not the rind.
Step 3
With a pen, mark the area you want to drill to the hole for the faucet. Get your power drill and gently start to drill a hole in the base of the melon.
Step 4
Carefully insert the long neck of the shank into the melon. Be sure not to jam it into the melon because it could cause it to break or crack. If you need to widen the hole, use the tip of a sharp knife. The shank has to fit very snug/tightly so you won’t have any leaks.
Step 5
Once the shank is in place, slide the O-ring on along with the adapter. Be sure that everything is tight and check for leaks. Once you confirm everything is in a good working condition, add the beverage of your choice to the melon. Top it with the “lid” you sat aside early and your drinks are ready to serve.
